Growing Fruit and Vegetables In Containers

Many people like the idea of being self-sufficient but often the stresses and strains of everyday life get in the way.  It’s difficult to make time to grow your own fruit and veg but this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try.  One of the best ways to ease yourself into this world is to grow your produce in containers.  Here are just a few different vegetables that can easily be grown in this manner.

Potatoes

A great vegetable that can be grown in just about anywhere in the world is the humble potato.  Potatoes are such a versatile vegetable to cook with so if you decide you want to grow them, you shouldn’t have a problem finding ways to use them.  You can buy seed potatoes or you can use an old potato that has started to sprout.  Just place them in a container of earth and within a short period of time you will have great potatoes that all the family can enjoy.  Learn more about how to plant seed potatoes in planter bags.

Salad Leaves

A great way to get your family to eat their greens is by planting salad leaves in containers.  You don’t even need to have a garden to do this because you can easily grow them on your window sill.  All you really need is a container, compost and some seeds.  The seeds and very cheap to buy and you can grow salad leaves for many months of the year.

Strawberries

There aren’t many people in this world who dislike strawberries.  For many people they signify that summer has begun and they taste great with ice cream and even a glass of sparkling wine.  When growing strawberries you need to keep them off the ground which is why growing them in containers is a good idea.  Generally the plants will last for three years which means you will need to buy new plants after that.  Be aware though that birds love strawberries so you might want to look at the ways you can keep birds away from your plants.

Growing your own fruit and veg is actually a lot easier than you might think and there are even kits that you can buy with just about everything you will need.  If you have children who refuse to eat their “greens” then getting them involved in the process will also help them eat a better diet.
