Adding Wicker to Any Home

I like wicker. I think it looks good, and it adds a natural feel to the rooms of my home. However, when I mention this to other people, they tell me that they don’t think it would look very good in their own home. That may be true, but it’s usually not. Here is how to fit wicker into your home design without it looking forced or unnatural.

For starters, one of the strengths of wicker is that it can hold a layer of paint. So right off the bat, you know you can paint it any color you want, to help it fit into the color design of your room. A plain wicker trunk may not fit into a room with a red undertone, but if you give the trunk itself a red undertone, or match it with a complementary color like a light green, it will look spectacular.

Another thing to do is match it up with designs that have straight lines in them. So if you have a room with striped wallpaper, the wicker will add a little dissonance to the feel of the room and they will complement each other very well. Or if it’s a room with solid colors, the wavy, uneven look of the wicker will draw eyes to it, and become an excellent piece in the room.

Finally, don’t be afraid to keep things in your wicker pieces. If you have a wicker chest in your living room, don’t be afraid to keep some toys or linens or something inside. That way, you’ll be getting use out of your furniture, as well as decorating with it.

Overall, wicker furniture will fit into practically any home design – most likely yours too, if you like the idea of trying it out. It’s an unusual addition to a home, in that it’s not terribly popular these days, but that doesn’t mean it looks bad.
